Tooth erosion is caused by excessive contact of the tooth surface with acids. They chemically dissolve minerals from the tooth substance, which becomes softer and more susceptible to mechanical stress. This usually results in a significant loss of substance and often also an increased sensitivity to cold, sweets and touch.
The process begins on the outside of the enamel and progresses to the underlying dentin and even to the nerve (pulp).
In contrast to caries, which involves acid-forming bacteria, dental erosions occur without the involvement of bacteria.
The triggering acids come either from the outside from acidic foods, such as fruit juices, cola and other highly acidic drinks, or from the inside from stomach acid, which affects reflux or bulimia patients.
An important prerequisite for the treatment of dental erosions is to recognise the causes of the loss of substance in the teeth and to stop them. Tooth erosions are irreversible, i.e. the lost tooth substance does not form again naturally.
The subsequent treatment focuses on replacing the lost tooth structure. Depending on the extent of the loss of substance, the defects can be restored with plastic fillings (composite material) or all-ceramic partial crowns. Often a bite elevation is necessary.
Which method the dentist chooses in an individual case depends primarily on the extent of the tooth erosion.
