Periodontal disease often goes unnoticed because inflammation of the periodontium (tooth root, gums and bone) does not cause pain for a long time. Often tooth loss is due to periodontal disease and not tooth decay.
Recognising periodontitis symptoms
Reddened gums, bleeding gums, receding gums but also constant bad breath are clear signs of gingivitis. If left untreated, periodontitis leads to an inflammatory breakdown of the entire periodontium, which can ultimately lead to the loss of the tooth.
Bacterial plaque on the gum line and later in the gum pocket is responsible for periodontitis.
Genetic predisposition, individual factors such as smoking and general diseases such as diabetes mellitus etc. are also risk factors for the development and progression of periodontitis.
Periodontitis can harm the entire organism
It is scientifically recognised that untreated periodontitis increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, premature birth or diabetes. Due to the general medical correlations, cooperation with other doctors such as internists, cardiologists, gynaecologists, dermatologists, diabetologists and smoking cessation therapists may be advisable.
Our experienced practice team will support you throughout the entire therapy period.
Treatment of periodontitis
Periodontitis treatment is very individual. That is why we first carry out a very precise diagnosis. The gingival pockets are examined and evaluated in connection with current x-rays. This detailed diagnosis allows us to assess the condition and the need for treatment of your periodontal apparatus and is the basis for a successful therapy.
The next step is the precise and complete removal of bacterial plaque and tartar above the gum line and in the gingival pockets.
The aim of periodontitis therapy is to reduce the pocket depth, eliminate the inflammation and stop the disease.
In order to maintain healthy teeth in the long term, regular follow-up care is particularly important after periodontitis therapy. Only with consistent aftercare is it possible to permanently establish inflammation-free conditions to preserve your healthy teeth - for life!
