Dental prosthodontics is a comprehensive sub-speciality in dentistry

Prosthodontics in dentistry is generally understood to mean the replacement of teeth with dental, usually laboratory-made work.

These dentures can be fixed or removable. A removable denture can and must be removed for cleaning. A fixed denture cannot be removed for daily cleaning. They are either cemented to the remaining teeth (bridges, crowns, partial crowns, etc.) or attached to implants that are anchored in the jawbone.

Whether a fixed or removable solution makes more sense must be decided individually in each case.

Examples of fixed dentures are as follows:

  • Crown and bridge reconstructions
  • Implant and / or tooth supported reconstructions
  • Veneers - Partial crowns
  • Adhesive bridges
  • Reconstruction in case of tooth erosion (bulimia, acid damage)
  • Total reconstructions / complete reconstructions

Examples of removable dentures are as follows:

  • Complete dentures
  • Hybrid dentures
  • Perio-Overdentures
  • Telescopic dentures
  • Model cast dentures/partial dentures

Total prostheses

A complete denture, also known as a third tooth, is the complete replacement of the dentition by means of plastic teeth on a base plate - without direct anchorage to underlying implants.
Even today, there are still a large number of people who have lost all their teeth.
Depending on whether the loss of teeth is recent or has existed for years, the jawbone is reduced to varying degrees.
There is usually a desire for a fixed denture. This goal can often be achieved in the toothless jaw through the targeted use of implants.
However, if the bony bed has degraded to such an extent that large soft tissue defects have also developed, or if there are underlying medical conditions and risk factors that make implant placement impossible, a total prosthesis can also offer advantages over fixed work.

Hybrid dentures

Removable works, especially hybrid dentures, are still an essential part of dental prosthetics today.
In hybrid dentures, both teeth and implants are used to anchor the removable denture. This means that, especially in the upper jaw, there is no need to cover the palate with the associated loss of taste.
In most cases, removable dental prostheses meet the highest aesthetic demands, wearing comfort and safety in everyday life.

Perio-Overdentures

With the perio overdenture, the root-treated tooth roots are fitted with gold caps and the denture is fitted on top. This removable solution enables optimal cleaning of the interdental spaces with the denture in place.

Telescopic prostheses

If there are only a few teeth left in the oral cavity and the remaining dentition allows it, a telescopic denture can be a very good alternative to a fixed solution.
This form of prosthesis feels like a removable bridge and usually dispenses completely with a gingival shield and the associated covering of the palate.
In addition, the still existing teeth must be preserved vital, which means that no root canal treatment is needed.

Model cast dentures/partial dentures

Partial dentures with cast metal framework, also called model cast dentures, have been used for decades to replace teeth in partially paid patients with simple means.
Advantages are the favourable price, the easy extensibility in case of further tooth loss and the absence of surgical interventions.
However, depending on the position of the lips, for example when laughing, the braces may become visible on the teeth.
